Halcyon Cabernet Franc: You Put A Spell on Me
Wine and music. You might not think they go together, but they actually do. I don’t know many people who aren’t affected by music. In a time when we are constantly asking ourselves can we separate the art from the artist, music more than ever is telling a story. Halcyon Wines are telling a story too; through wine and through music.
I recently discovered Halcyon Wines through their cofounder Kim Elwell. Kim reached out to me to meet up, chat, and to discuss their wine, story, and music on a recent visit to Napa Valley. Music and wine - a perfect combination.
Halcyon Wines uses one grape and that is Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Franc is usually blended and can be a persnickety little something and depending on where it grows can be the best thing since sliced bread or your worst wine nightmare. Thankfully, this Cabernet Franc decided to show up and show out in this wine.
I had told myself that I was going to wait. Wait and drink the wine for a special night. Since I was in California for the official Open that Bottle Night, I decided the best thing was to not wait and enjoy the wine. Each bottle is accompanied by a playlist and I decided to listen to the music while preparing dinner and tasting the wine. By the way, it paired deliciously with lamb meatballs and a simple arugula salad. I actually added a tablespoon of the wine to the vinaigrette.
Upon first sip I immediately said in my Action Bronson voice, “f^%k, that’s delicious.” I couldn’t help it. It was good. Then I took another sip and thought I wonder how this would taste in 30 minutes or an hour later. I wanted to give this wine the time and space it deserves. It needed to be savored and so I slowed down, patiently waited, and then devoured the wine and my meal while listening to the appropriately curated playlist.
Halcyon wine is more than a beverage, it is an experience and one that should be savored and shared over and over again on repeat.
