Lowkey Happy: Wines for a Wine Down (S4:E8)

For many black people, the past few weeks and months have been hard. I don’t have to explain this and I won’t. But, before you read my recap of Insecure’s Season4: Episode 8 “Wines for a Wine Down.” I want you to read this post from Natasha Rothwell who plays Kelly and is a writer and producer on the show. I decided to delay posting about episodes 8 and 9, but I’m remembering Natasha’s post and we could all use a little laughter and joy right now.

On this week’s episode we see Issa and Lawrence finally getting real and figuring out their own personal happy and unpacking their relationship. One of the things I liked about this episode was the discussion of the old wounds in a very calm, easy, real, and often humorous manner. Basically, getting to happy may not always been easy, but if you can get to it it’s beautiful.

This episode showcased Black joy which we desperately need right now.

Issa. Masottina Prosecco Brut. Who knew Issa had an interesting wine cocktail featuring Prosecco and Vodka. I tried. It’s not for me, but in the name of research I did. It is an interesting cocktail to say the list. the Masottina Prosecco Brut is so delicious to me, I can’t see adding anything else, unless it was peach purée to make a Bellini. Even for me that is pushing it. Masottina makes some delicious so I would let them shine on their own.

Lawrence. Biutiful Cava Brut Rosé. Lawrence finally admitted where he was mentally and emotionally to Issa which they both knew needed to be said. The way Lawrence was open with easy was beautiful to see. We often don’t get to see men, especially Black men, be this open, raw, honest, and emotional. It was beautiful, just like this Cava brut rosé.

Condola. Benoit Badoz Crémant du Jura. We learn it is over for Lawrence and Condola, but I had to give Condola a send off and she would be drinking a crémant to get past her time spent with Lawrence. This toasty and creamy sparkler is lush, goes with a ton of different foods, and is versatile. Just like opinion. I hope they figure out a way to keep her in the series.
